Part 3

There are 7 sizes of ukulele. The 3 most common are Soprano, Concert and Tenor. A 4th version which is becoming popular is the Baritone. This instrument is slightly larger than the Tenor but unlike the Tenor (and the smaller Concert and Soprano) the Baritone ululele has a different tuning.

The Soprano and Concert ukuleles are tuned as:

G4 C4 E4 A4

The Tenor ukulele can be fitted with a lower 4th (G) string giving the tuning:

G3 C4 E4 A4

The Baritone ukulele is tuned to:

D3 G3 B3 E4

As the Soprano, Concert and Tenor version use the same tuning, the notes are the same and thus the chords are the same.

As the Baritone ukulele is tuned differently, the notes on each string are different and therefore the chords are different. As the Baritone ukulele shares its tuning with a guitar, the chords are more like those of a guitar.

The chord of C Major on a Soprano, Concert and Tenor ukulele is the same as G Major on a Baritone. Use the wheel of help to convert between the two. Choose the Soprano / Concert/ Tenor chord in the yellow circle and read the Baritone chord on the blue circle.

Alternatively, if you want to play a particular chord on a Baritone, find the chord on the blue wheel and the shape will be the same as the corresponding chord on the yellow wheel.
